Worth to Note

Our association has always been run purely for the benefit of the members and as such no profits are made. This enables us to keep down the subscription costs. Thus it is only with the help of members in such activities as assisting on the committee, assisting as bailiffs or working on bank clearing that we can all make things work. Please contact any current committee member if you feel you can give even a small input to KAA.

Current News

25/7/2010 - Taylor's Lake

The problems at Taylor's lake continue to beset us. The rapid and excessive weed growth is proving to be a very difficult problem to counter. We have sought advice from various people in the business, spent several evenings trying to remove the weed manually, and purchased several treatments to try and combat the blanket weed. All this has met with limited success. Rest assured that we are still actively seeking an answer. The latest problem to challenge us is the dramatic fall in the water level. The lack of rainfall that we are always being told about seems to have dried up the water supply to the lake. The result is that Taylor's lake will not be stocked until these problems have been successfully resolved. It is not conducive to the health of the fish if they are continually stocked into water where the water level is falling and the temperature is rising. Members may fish the lake if they wish, but please bear in mind the above and don't ring Keith to complain.

22/7/2010 - Bristol Water team competition

The annual Bristol Water teams competition takes place on Sunday 22nd August at Chew Valley Lake. It is a boat competition for a teams of 6 anglers. It is fished to fishery rules and the competition is from 1000 - 1800. There is a free drink and meal on completition.

It is hoped that KAA will be able to enter a team. If you would like to represent KAA in this competition please contact Keith Caddick by Friday 30th July.

9/7/2010 - Upper Chew options for discussion

As has been mentioned previously, the Upper Chew is not fishing as well as it has done in previous years. Well over 300 fish have been stocked since March, but only a small percentage of these have been caught. The club has requested the EA test the water quality on several occasions this year, and each time the report has come back stating that the water quality is excellent. So where have the fish gone and, just as important, why? Is the river undergoing a change and can no longer support fish of the size that are stocked? Are we suffering from predation by Mink, Otters and/or Cormorants? Poaching? Whatever the reason, it is plainly obvious that the club cannot sustain a situation where it is losing a very high percentage of each stocking. This would amount to financial madness.

Following a suggestion by several members, the committee has put forward an option for discussion by you the members: -

"Stocking of rainbow trout should cease on the Upper Chew and the river is allowed to revert to a wild brown trout fishery."

The committee would like as many of you as possible to comment on the above sugestion. Please pass your thoughts to any committee member or bailiff. It is vitally important that we get a large response to this request.

8/7/2010 - Difficult decisions need to be made

A few weeks ago, the coalition government announced a range of expenditure cuts and tax rises that will have a very big impact on everyone of us. From public sector pay freezes to VAT at 20%, the result is that belts will have to be tightened and budget control becomes vitally important. Not only will we, as individuals, feel the impact, but clubs and associations like KAA will also feel the knock on effects of the Chancellor's announcements. The committee has produced a letter which lays out the impact on KAA, and some steps we can take to try and lessen this impact. Download a copy here.

8/7/2010 - River Wellow at Stoney Littleton

A map is now available for those who want to fish for wild brown trout on the Stoney Littleton stretch of the river Wellow. Download a copy by clicking here.

3/7/2010 - Competition Result

Last Sunday 17 members turned up for the first club competition of the year. The weather gods came up with a bright sunny day, and although this usually means very difficult conditions for fishing, most members managed to catch. As has been the norm in recent years, the winner fished CMR despite some members going to ackers which had been fishing well.

The result was: -

  1. Malcolm Fisher - 4lb 3oz
  2. Chris Elms - 3lb 13oz
  3. S Bryant - 3lb 1oz

Thank you to those members who turned up to take part and made the occasion a success. Congratulations to Malcolm Fisher.

The next competition is scheduled for Sunday 19th September. Come along and support the club. What better way is there to spend a few hours on a Sunday morning.

20/6/2010 - Information from members is vital

The committee can only get problems at our venues sorted out if we are informed about them. If you are fishing at one of our venues, and you notice something that isn't right then please contact a bailiff or committee member. The contact numbers are on your membership tab. If we are informed as soon as possible then we can make arrangements to get someone to visit and stop a problem from becoming a major crisis. A case in point was Taylor's lake. A committee member visited the venue on Thursday afternoon and found the vegetation had grown to such an extent, that it had become a hazard. A couple of phone calls later and the hazard had been removed by Saturday afternoon. It was disappointing to see, from the returns sheet, that several members had visited Taylor's earlier this week but did not report the state of the vegetation. Please report anything at all, don't think that someone else has already done so. We would much rather have 10 members reporting the same problem, than not hearing about it at all. It is in everyone's interest that any problem is sorted out quickly, as if it develops into a major crisis then it is possible that venues will have to be closed until everything is OK.

19/6/2010 - Upper Chew

Those of you who have regularly fished the Upper Chew will have noticed that the river does not seem the same as in previous years. The river has been stocked as usual since March, but the fishing has been inconsistent at best. You can rest assured that the committee is fully aware of the situation and is in contact with the EA to try and find the reason why. The EA are constantly monitoring the state of the water, and the latest tests have given the water a clean bill of health.

8/6/2010 - June Newsletter

The June edition of the newsletter is now available in the download links section on this page.

6/6/2010 - Club competition dates

Remember the date of our first club competition is only 3 weeks away.

The dates for the two club competitions are: -

1. Sunday 27th June

2. Sunday 19th September**

Competitors must sign in at CMR from 0815. Fishing is from 0900 - 1200. Competitors may fish any of the club's venues but must ensure they return to CMR by 1230 for the weigh in.

Those wishing to fish CMR will draw for pegs at 0830. They will draw 3 pegs and will move around these pegs every hour, on the hour.

There will be an entrance fee of £3. The total will then be divided three ways, with the winner, angler with the biggest fish and KAA all receiving an equal share.

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed anglers at each competition.

**The date for the second club competition has been pushed back in order to avoid the weed growth, which has made large parts of the reservoir difficult to fish in recent years.

4/12/09 - Clarification of rules for Ackers, Taylor's and Publow

In response to members' requests to remove any grey areas regarding the rules for the above venues, the committee has decided that the following adjustments will be made to the current rules.

1. Ackers, Taylor's and Publow will remain floating lines only.

2. Flies used at Ackers, Taylor's and Publow must conform to International rules, i.e. Maximum hook size 10 with a maximum hook length of 5/8 inch. Maximum length of the dressed fly is 15/16 inch.

KAA will provide the means to check that your flies measure up at each of the venues.

We believe that these adjustments will make it easier for everyone to understand the rules.
